Salik Charges Dubai: Rental Car Guide

By LetsGo Car Rental Team

Salik charges depend on when you cross a gate. Compare Dubai’s current toll rates, VAT and free hours, then check how tolls enter your rental-car bill.

As checked on 26 October 2026, a chargeable Salik crossing costs AED 6.30 at the peak tariff or AED 4.20 at the off-peak tariff, including 5% VAT. These figures cover the official toll and its VAT. Any rental-company administration charge is a separate question for your booking agreement.

How much are Salik charges in Dubai?

Salik uses variable pricing rather than one flat charge all day. Its published base tariffs are AED 6 and AED 4. Since 1 June 2026, 5% VAT applies to toll tariffs, making those amounts AED 6.30 and AED 4.20. The VAT change is confirmed in Salik’s official disclosure of 22 May 2026.

Normal timetable outside Ramadan — Dubai local time; official toll per chargeable crossing
Day and timeBase tariffIncluding 5% VAT
Monday–Saturday: 6–10am and 4–8pmAED 6AED 6.30
Monday–Saturday: 10am–4pm and 8pm–1amAED 4AED 4.20
Sunday: 6am–1am, except public holidays and eventsAED 4AED 4.20
Daily: 1–6amNo tollAED 0

The time bands and Sunday exception follow Salik’s published variable-pricing schedule. Saturday follows the normal charging bands; it is not a free-toll day. Check announcements for public holidays or events instead of assuming the ordinary Sunday rule applies.

What changes during Ramadan?

The published Ramadan timetable moves peak hours to 9am–5pm, off-peak hours to 7–9am and 5pm–2am, and the no-toll window to 2–7am. Sundays retain the off-peak tariff outside that free window, subject to the public-holiday and event exception. See Salik’s official normal and Ramadan timetable. Recheck the announced schedule and tax treatment for your actual travel dates.

When do two toll gates count as one charge?

There are two specific paired-gate arrangements:

  • Al Safa North and Al Safa South: crossing both in the same direction within one hour is charged once.
  • Al Mamzar North and Al Mamzar South: the single-charge rule also applies when both gates are crossed in the same direction within one hour.

This is not a general “all gates within an hour” discount, and it does not combine an Al Safa crossing with an Al Mamzar crossing. The two pairs are identified separately in Salik’s disclosure. For a journey close to a tariff change, ask for the recorded transaction details rather than guessing how the pair was charged.

How should you handle Salik in a rental car?

Salik is an electronic system: a gate reads the vehicle’s tag and the charge is deducted from its associated account. There is no cash booth to pay at each crossing. Salik explains the automatic process here.

At collection, ask LetsGo to confirm the car’s Salik setup and how recorded use will be billed to your booking. Do not buy, register or move a tag without the team’s instructions. Keep these three items clear in your quote:

  • Official tolls: the applicable charge for each billable transaction, including its VAT.
  • Administration: whether an additional handling fee applies, its amount and charging basis, and whether the quoted fee includes VAT.
  • Settlement: when charges are reconciled, how payment is collected, and how you can obtain the transaction breakdown.

Do not assume Salik is included in the advertised daily or monthly rental rate. Ask for any inclusion to be stated in the written quote. An official toll-free crossing also does not, by itself, answer whether a rental-company handling charge applies; confirm that point before booking.

A simple toll budget for a rental day

Suppose your ordinary weekday outside Ramadan includes two peak and two off-peak billable crossings, with no paired-gate reduction. The toll calculation is:

  • Two peak crossings: 2 × AED 6.30 = AED 12.60.
  • Two off-peak crossings: 2 × AED 4.20 = AED 8.40.
  • Total official tolls including VAT: AED 21.00.

Five days with exactly that pattern would total AED 105.00. This is an illustrative toll budget, not a LetsGo invoice: any agreed administration charge remains separate. VAT is already included in these calculations, so do not add another 5% to the same toll amounts.

Build tolls into your commute budget when comparing monthly car rentals. A route with fewer tolls can still cost more in fuel or take longer. Compare both before changing plans, and set your route before driving.

What to check on your rental toll statement

Use the recorded journey details to check a charge, rather than relying only on the day a payment appears:

  1. Match the vehicle registration and the collection/return times to your booking.
  2. Check each crossing’s date, time, gate and applicable tariff.
  3. If a named gate pair appears, check direction, elapsed time and the resulting charge.
  4. Compare any administration amount with your written agreement and check how VAT is shown.
  5. Check whether the same transactions were already included in an earlier payment.

If an item is unclear, send LetsGo the booking reference, invoice and specific transaction you want explained. A toll charge, an administration fee and an official fine are different items; request supporting details if a statement includes a penalty. The payment or refund process depends on the agreed rental terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Salik free on Sundays?

No. Under the normal timetable, Sunday uses the off-peak tariff outside the 1–6am no-toll window, with exceptions for public holidays and events. Ramadan uses a different overnight window.

Is the Salik charge still AED 4?

AED 4 is the off-peak base tariff. With the 5% VAT effective from 1 June 2026, that toll is AED 4.20. A peak base tariff of AED 6 becomes AED 6.30. Any agreed rental administration charge is separate.

Does paying Salik also cover parking?

Road tolls and parking are separate costs. Check the parking location’s payment instructions rather than assuming a road-toll payment covers your stay. Our Dubai rental-car parking guide explains what to check.
